In 1953, a British Centurion tank was placed at the epicenter of an atomic bomb test carried out in southern Australia. Showing unexpected resilience and defying all expectations, the Centurion withstood a 9.1 kiloton atomic blast. It was sandblasted, lightly damaged, and radioactive, but it was fully operational, and remained in active service for a further 40 years.
